Connect Stories to Everyday Life

A great place to start is to find opportunities that tie what you’re reading to a real-world experience. Reading an animal story? Why don’t you plan a trip to the zoo, aquarium or farm to see real live animals doing their thing? This helps your child make positive connections between reading and the awesome memories you share together doing cool stuff.

Let Your Little One Lead the Conversation

Encourage them to ask questions or share their thoughts about the story and characters. This is a great way to build reading comprehension and make reading an interactive experience.

Mix It Up with Props

Adding some simple props you can easily find around your home is a surefire way to make reading time more engaging. Think about a flashlight for wonderful bedtime adventures, stuffed animals and dolls as characters from the book, or even simple drawings can help bring stories to life in a fresh, exciting way.

Introduce “Special Book Time”

Set aside one day a week for a “Special Book Time”. This is a slightly longer reading session than normal. You can jazz it up with a themed storytime, or books paired with special activities, like crafts or snacks. (Snacks - it should always include snacks).

Revisit Your Child’s Favourite Books in a Creative Way

Act out parts of the story in a fun, family concert, or draw scenes and characters together. You can even imagine alternative endings to some of their most-loved stories. Perfect for getting those creative imagination juices flowing.
