Discover 8 engaging ways to get your preschooler interested in reading. From choosing books about their interests to creating a cosy reading space, find out more

Getting your preschool-aged child interested in reading can be a real challenge…

Especially given that kids that age are still growing their attention spans, have diverse interests, and let's face it, have the temptation of more visually stimulating activities.

But the benefits of engaging your preschooler in reading are just as much. It enhances their cognitive development, fosters creativity, and lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Here are 8 ways to get preschoolers interested in reading.

1. Always offer your child reading material

Keep a nice variety of books around for your child to explore and choose from. Place books within reach (especially at their eye level) in different areas of your home to encourage a spontaneous moment for reading.

2. Choose books that involve their interests

If your preschooler loves animals, choose books that feature their favourite creatures, or if they’re fascinated by trucks, find picture books about construction sites. Whatever their current passions are, chances are if you get them a book about it, reading it will naturally follow.

3. Create a reading space

Cosy corners encourage rewarding reading. Soft cushions, good lighting, and decor in your child’s favourite colours and featuring their favourite characters go a long way to make the reading space inviting, fostering a positive association with reading.

4. Exhibit a love of reading

Children imitate their parents (a scary thought, I know). But when you show your child that you value reading by letting them see you with books and discussing your favourite stories, it can instil a similar love for reading in your child.

5. Family Reading Night

Having a regular family reading night where everyone gathers to read is a great way to consistently encourage reading - even if it’s only a dedicated night once a week. Make it fun by including snacks and comfy seating.

6. Let your child choose

Giving your child the autonomy to select the books they want to read (and have an interest in) makes reading more appealing and engaging.

7. Read aloud

Reading aloud is a great way to bond while improving your preschooler’s listening skills. Try using expressive voices to bring the story and its characters to life and introduce new vocabulary and concepts.

8. Read Together

Spend time reading with your child every day - even if only for a few minutes. These beautiful moments together create a nurturing environment for learning. Take turns reading pages or follow along as your child narrates the pictures - it’s an absolutely magical way to see how their minds work and learn about what’s important to them.
