Learn how busy families make time for reading with these 7 tips? Weave reading into daily routines, turn downtime into story time, and create unforgettable family moments

These days it seems like we’re running from one thing to the next.

Meetings, work things, school, homework, activities, socialising. Everything seems to be pulling at our calendars from the moment we wake up, til our head hits the pillow to sleep.

So finding time to read as a family can be really challenging. But reading together is a wonderful way to bond, promote literacy, and create lasting memories.

Here are 7 super simple, very practical tips to help busy families make time for reading.

1. Make Reading Part of our Daily Routines

Reading bedtime stories as part of your nightly routine, even if it’s just for a few minutes before bed can help create a soothing way to end the day. Alternatively, if your evenings are too hectic consider starting the day with reading a short story over breakfast. A calm, engaging book can be a great way to start your morning.

2. Use Downtime to Your Advantage

If you always carry your child’s favourite book (or use Nooksy’s app), any time you end up waiting for something like a doctor's appointment, or waiting for your child’s sibling to finish sports practice, provides a great opportunity to read to your child (rather than answering emails, or scrolling through social media).

3. Create a Reading Nook

Creating a cosy corner in your home (think comfortable seating, good lighting, and a variety of books) dedicated to reading makes it that much more inviting and increases the likelihood of your family gravitating towards it to enjoy reading together.

4. Set Reading Goals

Establish small, achievable reading goals for your family. For example, aim to read one book every week. Bonus points for celebrating reaching those goals as it’ll help keep the whole family’s reading motivation high.

5. Make Reading Social

Start a family book club with other families where everyone reads the same book (or books) and then discusses it together. You could also arrange playdates that include a reading session - this works nicely if you have the special reading nook we mentioned earlier. Kids can take turns reading aloud to one another which promotes both socialisation and literacy.

6. Model Reading Behavior to Your Little Ones

Children often mimic their parents' habits, so if they see you reading, they are more likely to want to read too. When they see you reading yourself, it shows them that reading is important.

7. Be Flexible

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just remember that some days will be busier than others. Be flexible with your reading time and don’t stress if you miss a day. What’s important is the overall habit of reading together.

Finding time for reading in a busy schedule may seem daunting, but with a few small adjustments and creative thinking, it’s entirely possible. By prioritising reading, you not only foster a love for books in your children, but also create cherished family moments.
